The Toshiba Excite 13 sports the largest tablet screen yet

Toshiba reveals the first post 10.1-inch tablet and outfits it with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor.
Tablet screens are evolving. So far in 2012, we've seen the iPad double its resolution to 2048x1536 and the AMOLED-based Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 reach black level depths that were previously unheard of (but, thankfully becoming more common) on a tablet. So where do we go from here? If Toshiba has its say, we go big.
Today Toshiba introduced the first tablet to break the 10.1-inch barrier. Its new Excite 13 sports a 13.3-inch IPS screen, running at a 1600x900 resolution and comes installed with Android 4.0.
I got a chance to briefly play around with the tablet a few weeks ago. One might expect a tablet with a 3-inch larger screen to feel a bit light and somewhat heavier than conventional 10-inchers and that's exactly what I found here.
Certain apps definitely seemed more at home on the larger screen, however. The Android Maps app in particular looked more impressive and somehow felt easier to use on the 13.3-inch screen than I'd ever experienced before.
I can only imagine what advantages the large screen might afford when playing something like Catan or other board games. Also, someone needs to make a Ouija game for this tablet, stat!
At only 0.4-inches thick the Excite 13 isn't much more substantial than most other tablets. It does weigh in at 2.2 pounds, however. Not "heavy" by any means, but definitely heavier than what I'm used to. Thankfully, Toshiba saw fit to include a stand with the tablet.
Those of you patiently awaiting the Tegra 3 quad-core tablet explosion have likely been disappointed in the last few months, but things look to be picking up. The Excite 13 houses a Tegra 3 CPU, 1GB of RAM, includes micro USB, Micro HDMI, four speakers, and like the Toshiba Thrive before it, a full-size SD card slot. A 2-megapixel front camera and a 5-megapixel back camera round out the features.
And from the "I'll believe it when I see it department" Toshiba purports a 13 hour battery life for the Excite 13. Impressive, if our tests confirm such a long duration.
We'll find out in early June when the Excite 13 arrives in stores. $650 nets you 32GBs of storage, while the 64GB model will retail for $750. These are Wi-Fi-only models and there are no current plans for carrier versions.
My initial, gut reaction to those prices is "too expensive". I know Toshiba is offering more screen real estate than any other tablet before it and includes some nice extras like micro HDMI and full SD support, but once you get over the excitement of the larger than ever screen, you've a normal Android tablet with no added functionality like the Prime's keyboard.
That's my initial assessment at least. I'll need to spend some proper time with the Excite 13 to fairly judge whether its value. Look for a full review in early June.

More Galaxy S III rumors emerge: Home button sticking around

The latest rumors say the Galaxy S III will, in fact, maintain Samsung's traditional home button, despite Ice Cream Sandwich making it unnecessary.

Samsung's Galaxy S III has yet to be revealed. But that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from churning out new reports on what the device might offer.
South Korea newspaper Korean Digital Daily is reporting today (Translate), citing sources, that the Galaxy S III will come with Samsung's familiar home button under the display. There has been some speculation that the device would ditch the home button, since its functionality is replicated in Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), the operating system believed to be coming to the handset.
The decision wasn't so easy, according to the report. Some Samsung executives thought that ditching all buttons on the device would be a good idea, while others decided that a home button would be necessary. Ultimately, according to the report, those in the physical-button camp won out.
In addition, Korean Digital Daily says that the Galaxy S III will come with the five-column icon layout featured in the Samsung Galaxy Note, rather than the four-column flavor in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The move might be a subtle attempt to differentiate the Galaxy S III from competing Android devices, as well as the iPhone, since that device comes with four columns of icons.
The sheer number of rumors that have surfaced around the Galaxy S III is somewhat shocking. In most cases, it's Apple's iPhone or iPad that gets all the rumor love. But Samsung has quickly asserted itself as a top player in the mobile space, trading the top spot and second slot in total smartphone shipments with Apple. The company's Galaxy S II was well-received by consumers, and the Galaxy Nexus is widely viewed as a worthwhile iPhone alternative.
But through all the hype and rumors, Samsung has remained tight-lipped on its plans, deciding to take a page out of Apple's book and say nothing. The company has also declined for comment on today's report.
Still, Samsung isn't expected to stay quiet for long: the company is expected to unveil the device at a May 22 press conference in London.

sony Ericsson Xperia SOLA, Classic touch..!

The latest Android smartphone from Sony, the Xperia sola, takes the touch out of the touch screen – although we’re not yet sure how.
One of the device’s key features is “floating touch” navigation, which enables web browsing without touching the screen.
“Sony’s unique floating touch lets consumers navigate the web by hovering their finger above the screen so it acts like a moving curser, without actually having to touch the screen,” Sony claims, adding that the technology will evolve through “software updates and engagement with developers.”
Other than that, the device is a fairly standard Android 2.3 handset (upgradeable to Android 4.0 during summer 2012), with a 3.7” Reality Display, a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, NFC and Xperia SmartTags support, as well as “3D surround sound.

Android users, the time has almost come. Instagram, the popular photo-filtering and sharing app, is on its way to Google’s mobile operating system.

Co-founder Kevin Systrom announced at SXSW Sunday that the long-awaited Android version of Instagram is nearly here. He teased the version on stage, but didn’t provide a demo. The Android version is currently being tested in private beta and will be released “very soon.”

“In some ways, it’s better than our iOS app. It’s crazy,” Systrom said. In a Q&A following his presentation, Systrom said the app is fast, works great on large screens and can share photos to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and other networks.

HTC working on a 3D version of the Flyer?

More tablets from HTC ahead!
We just heard that the Taiwanese company is working on a 3D version of its Flyer slate and we even got a photo of a part of the device to prove it. What you are seeing here should be the topmost part of the upcoming stereoscopic slate and as you can see, it features two cameras rather than one.
Now leaks based on just a piece of hardware should definitely be filled under uncertain, but seeing the interest that the EVO 3D generate, it would be strange if HTC didn’t keep pushing on the stereoscopic front.
Plus, the photo doesn’t look photoshopped so if someone is trying to trick us then they actually went through the trouble of creating the part for real. And I can’t see anyone doing that for an HTC device.
The only bit we find a little strange is the position of the two cameras.

We believe shooting on tablets feels more natural in landscape  and it seems the 3D Flyer will make you use the camera in portrait mode.
Anyway, let’s not throw any stones before we see an official announcement
Hopefully it won’t take too long to come.

Oracle asks to depose Larry Page over Android suit

Google CEO Larry Page might soon face questioning related to his company's legal battle over Android and Java.

Oracle yesterday submitted a request to Judge Donna Ryu of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to depose the Google co-founder and CEO regarding his involvement in his company's acquisition of Android in 2005. FOSS Patents was first to report on the news.

"Mr. Page is Google's CEO, and he reportedly made the decision to acquire Android, Inc., and thereby develop and launch the platform that Oracle now contends infringes its patents and copyrights," Oracle wrote in its letter to the judge. "Mr. Page also participated in negotiations that took place between Sun and Google regarding a Java license for Android and in subsequent communications with Oracle's CEO, Larry Ellison (whose deposition Google has requested). Oracle believes that Mr. Page's testimony will likely be relevant with respect to a number of other key issues in this case as well, including the value of the infringement to Google."

Oracle sued Google in August, alleging that the search giant violated a host of patents and copyrights related to Java, which Oracle acquired early last year from Sun Microsystems. In the lawsuit filed with the District Court, Oracle argued that Java is a mobile operating system competitor to Android, and by allegedly using Java-derived technologies, Google's platform, including its Dalvik virtual machine, is violating its intellectual property.

In October, Google responded, saying that Dalvik does not, in fact, violate Java patents and copyrights.

"Although software applications for the Android platform may be written in the Java programming language, the Dalvik bytecode is distinct and different from Java bytecode," Google wrote in its answer to Oracle's suit. "The Dalvik VM is not a Java VM."

But that didn't stop Oracle. Last month, the company filed another document with the District Court, saying that it's seeking $2.6 billion in damages from Google. A couple weeks earlier, Google filed a document that said it would owe Oracle between $1.4 billion and $6.1 billion if it loses the case.

Oracle's filing yesterday, requesting to question Larry Page, wasn't taken lightly by Google. In the same document, Google issued a response to Oracle's request, saying that Oracle is simply coming "to this court gnashing [its] teeth with an eleventh-hour attempt to cram extra depositions into the last couple weeks of the discovery period." The search giant said that Oracle's request to question Page is a "harassing demand" and "superfluous given the testimony already made available."

Central to Google's argument is Android founder and current Vice President for Android, Andy Rubin. Google says that Rubin, who was already deposed by Oracle's attorneys, "is far more knowledgeable regarding the facts surrounding Google's acquisition of Android" than Page.

"Accordingly, the deposition of Mr. Page would be unnecessarily duplicative of testimony already available through other witnesses, and would only serve Oracle's goal of harassing Google's most senior executive," Google wrote in its response with the court.

If Oracle is allowed to question Page, the company will need to hurry. According to the documents, depositions must be completed by July 29.

In addition to Larry Page, Oracle has asked to question former Google employees Dipchand Nishar, who worked on the company's mobile efforts, and Bob Lee, who "led the core library development for Android." Tim Lindholm, a current Android engineer and former employee of Sun, has also been cited in Oracle's requests for deposition.

Next Nexus phone to pack a dedicated Google+ button, to be manufactured by HTC

Here’s a juicy rumor for all the Android purists out there. The next Nexus phone (reportedly called Nexus 3) will be manufactured by HTC and it will be packing a dedicated Google+ button. Supposedly that button will work much like the Facebook button on the ChaCha and Salsa HTC smartphones.
This means that you will be able to share content from your smartphone just by clicking the button, rather than having to through numerous menus on the touchscreen.
Now this rumor is coming from the a Google Plus fan page (which says the info originates from a Google employee), so you would be smart to take it with several pinches of salt, but we can certainly see the logic behind such move. Google is quite keen to promote its Google+ social network and what better way than through its ultra-popular mobile platform.
