Dual-SIM HTC Desire V available in INDIA

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-based HTC Desire V, the company’s first dual-SIM offering, is now available in India, priced at Rs. 21,999 at online retailer Flipkart, which says it can deliver the phone in 6-8 business days. Expect an official India retail launch from the Taiwanese mobile manufacturer in the same period.

Flipkart is bundling an 8GB microSD card with the recently introduced Desire V, making its price a little easier to swallow. Bearing a Cortex-A5 1GHz processor (albeit outdated) on the Qualcomm MSM7227A chipset, coupled with an Adreno 200 GPU and 512MB of RAM, the HTC Desire V will become the most capable dual-SIM Android phone currently available in India, if not the most expensive.

Its biggest advantages over competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos (priced at just Rs. 15,090) are that it comes with ICS out-of-the-box, and bears a full 4-inch (800x480) display, Beats Audio and a slightly faster processor and GPU combination.

Other features of the HTC Desire V include 4GB of built-in storage, 25GB of free Dropbox cloud storage (2 year subscription), a 5MP autofocus camera with LED flash, no secondary camera, and a 1,650 mAh battery. The HTC Desire V bears HTC Sense 4.0 UI on top of ICS. It weighs in at 114 grams, and is just 9.3mm thick. It offers dual-SIM capability of the GSM-GSM type.

Samsung to unveil Galaxy S III on May 3

The “Next Galaxy” or the much awaited Samsung Galaxy S III, will be officially unveiled on May 3 at an event in London, for which invitations are being circulated.
We’ve been hearing about the Galaxy S III from October last year, were expecting it at 2012, and then MWC<mobile world congress> 2012. Numerous speculated specifications have been doing the rounds of course, with anticipations building with the lack of official information. Unfortunately, Samsung has not put any of the rumours to rest, and we’ll have to wait till the May 3 launch for more details.

The Samsung Galaxy S II did very well in most markets, with users impressed by the phone’s raw performance, and brilliant AMOLED display (Galaxy S II). The Galaxy S III, as the new flagship of the biggest mobile manufacturer in the world, has a lot of expectations riding on it, and accordingly, the rumoured specifications are suitably spectacular as well.

A quad-core processor is more than a definite possibility, with almost all the latest generation of devices from other major manufacturers toting four processing cores. The Galaxy S III is rumoured to sport a quad-core Exynos 4412 chipset of unknown clock speed, along with something (supposedly 5 times) better than the Mali 400 GPU on the S II. Just how well it will perform against the 1.5GHz quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset, with its 5-Plus-1 architecture, remains to be seen.

The Galaxy S III is expected to bear a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus HD display, with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. While 2GB of RAM has been rumoured in the past, it seems unlikely Samsung would see the need for anything beyond 1GB. The device will once again push the bounds of slimness, with a 7 mm thickness one of the more recent rumours.

A 12MP camera is expected on Samsung’s new flagship Android device, with a W750 BSI CMOS sensor, autofocus, and LED flash, capable of 1080p HD video recording. A 1.3MP front-facing camera will probably also make its way onto the device. As with the Galaxy S II, the device is expected to ship in 16GB and 32GB variants, and this time, a 64GB variant might also be available.

The Toshiba Excite 13 sports the largest tablet screen yet

Toshiba reveals the first post 10.1-inch tablet and outfits it with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor.
Tablet screens are evolving. So far in 2012, we've seen the iPad double its resolution to 2048x1536 and the AMOLED-based Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 reach black level depths that were previously unheard of (but, thankfully becoming more common) on a tablet. So where do we go from here? If Toshiba has its say, we go big.
Today Toshiba introduced the first tablet to break the 10.1-inch barrier. Its new Excite 13 sports a 13.3-inch IPS screen, running at a 1600x900 resolution and comes installed with Android 4.0.
I got a chance to briefly play around with the tablet a few weeks ago. One might expect a tablet with a 3-inch larger screen to feel a bit light and somewhat heavier than conventional 10-inchers and that's exactly what I found here.
Certain apps definitely seemed more at home on the larger screen, however. The Android Maps app in particular looked more impressive and somehow felt easier to use on the 13.3-inch screen than I'd ever experienced before.
I can only imagine what advantages the large screen might afford when playing something like Catan or other board games. Also, someone needs to make a Ouija game for this tablet, stat!
At only 0.4-inches thick the Excite 13 isn't much more substantial than most other tablets. It does weigh in at 2.2 pounds, however. Not "heavy" by any means, but definitely heavier than what I'm used to. Thankfully, Toshiba saw fit to include a stand with the tablet.
Those of you patiently awaiting the Tegra 3 quad-core tablet explosion have likely been disappointed in the last few months, but things look to be picking up. The Excite 13 houses a Tegra 3 CPU, 1GB of RAM, includes micro USB, Micro HDMI, four speakers, and like the Toshiba Thrive before it, a full-size SD card slot. A 2-megapixel front camera and a 5-megapixel back camera round out the features.
And from the "I'll believe it when I see it department" Toshiba purports a 13 hour battery life for the Excite 13. Impressive, if our tests confirm such a long duration.
We'll find out in early June when the Excite 13 arrives in stores. $650 nets you 32GBs of storage, while the 64GB model will retail for $750. These are Wi-Fi-only models and there are no current plans for carrier versions.
My initial, gut reaction to those prices is "too expensive". I know Toshiba is offering more screen real estate than any other tablet before it and includes some nice extras like micro HDMI and full SD support, but once you get over the excitement of the larger than ever screen, you've a normal Android tablet with no added functionality like the Prime's keyboard.
That's my initial assessment at least. I'll need to spend some proper time with the Excite 13 to fairly judge whether its value. Look for a full review in early June.

More Galaxy S III rumors emerge: Home button sticking around

The latest rumors say the Galaxy S III will, in fact, maintain Samsung's traditional home button, despite Ice Cream Sandwich making it unnecessary.

Samsung's Galaxy S III has yet to be revealed. But that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from churning out new reports on what the device might offer.
South Korea newspaper Korean Digital Daily is reporting today (Translate), citing sources, that the Galaxy S III will come with Samsung's familiar home button under the display. There has been some speculation that the device would ditch the home button, since its functionality is replicated in Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), the operating system believed to be coming to the handset.
The decision wasn't so easy, according to the report. Some Samsung executives thought that ditching all buttons on the device would be a good idea, while others decided that a home button would be necessary. Ultimately, according to the report, those in the physical-button camp won out.
In addition, Korean Digital Daily says that the Galaxy S III will come with the five-column icon layout featured in the Samsung Galaxy Note, rather than the four-column flavor in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The move might be a subtle attempt to differentiate the Galaxy S III from competing Android devices, as well as the iPhone, since that device comes with four columns of icons.
The sheer number of rumors that have surfaced around the Galaxy S III is somewhat shocking. In most cases, it's Apple's iPhone or iPad that gets all the rumor love. But Samsung has quickly asserted itself as a top player in the mobile space, trading the top spot and second slot in total smartphone shipments with Apple. The company's Galaxy S II was well-received by consumers, and the Galaxy Nexus is widely viewed as a worthwhile iPhone alternative.
But through all the hype and rumors, Samsung has remained tight-lipped on its plans, deciding to take a page out of Apple's book and say nothing. The company has also declined for comment on today's report.
Still, Samsung isn't expected to stay quiet for long: the company is expected to unveil the device at a May 22 press conference in London.

Samsung starts bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to Galaxy S II

The company says that the update is already available in a few European countries and Korea, and will come to the U.K. next week.
After launching the Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), Samsung has decided to bring the software to its other devices.
The company will kick off the Ice Cream Sandwich rollout with its Galaxy S II, it announced on its Facebook page last night. The device's owners in Poland, Hungary, and Sweden, as well as Korea, already have access to the update. In a follow-up statement to gadget news and reviews site Pocket-lint today, Samsung said that it plans to make Ice Cream Sandwich available to U.K. customers starting next week.
Samsung announced plans to start rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich on its devices earlier this year. At the time, the company said that it would make Ice Cream Sandwich available on both its Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Note. In last night's statement, Samsung said that the "Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Tab 8.9, and 10.1" will be getting Ice Cream Sandwich "soon."
Samsung has yet to say when it will bring Ice Cream Sandwich to other countries around the world. However, it did acknowledge that "specific models upgradeable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and wireless carriers' requirements."

sony Ericsson Xperia SOLA, Classic touch..!

The latest Android smartphone from Sony, the Xperia sola, takes the touch out of the touch screen – although we’re not yet sure how.
One of the device’s key features is “floating touch” navigation, which enables web browsing without touching the screen.
“Sony’s unique floating touch lets consumers navigate the web by hovering their finger above the screen so it acts like a moving curser, without actually having to touch the screen,” Sony claims, adding that the technology will evolve through “software updates and engagement with developers.”
Other than that, the device is a fairly standard Android 2.3 handset (upgradeable to Android 4.0 during summer 2012), with a 3.7” Reality Display, a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, NFC and Xperia SmartTags support, as well as “3D surround sound.

LG unveils 4G phone

LG Electronics Inc, the world's No.3 handset maker, launched a new smartphone that runs on South Korea's fast, fourth-generation network, in the company's latest attempt to rescue its loss-making handset business.

The Optimus LTE will square off against Samsung Electronics Co's 4G version of its flagship Galaxy S model and Apple's new iPhone, which runs on standard 3G network, during the key year-end holiday season.

The high-end model comes after LG suffered five consecutive quarterly losses from handset sales and is set to report a wider loss for the September quarter later this month due to a lack of attractive high-end models.

LG has been slower than its bigger rivals to refocus on smartphones, and its smaller scale has held it back from profiting from rising demand for cheaper phones.

The firm now hopes its early move to the 4G segment can help revive its fortunes. "Optimus LTE is our ambitious product that mobilizes our LTE and display technologies," Na Young-bae, senior vice president and head of LG's domestic marketing, told reporters.

The model, with a 4.5-inch high-definition screen, has an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera. It is powered by Qualcomm Inc's 1.5 GHz dual core processing chip and Google's gingerbread version of the Android operating system.

Its hardware offering is similar to Samsung's Galaxy S II LTE. LG said it has yet to decide when the product will go on sale in overseas markets.

It has some 1,400 LTE patents, which some analysts estimate are worth $8 billion. LG is expected to report that loss margins from handset sales worsened in the third quarter to around 3 per cent from 1.7 per cent loss margin in the second quarter, due to reduced volume shipments after it trimmed feature phone lineups to focus on smartphones.

In July, the company cut this year's smartphone sales target by 20 percent to 24 million units and gave no outlook for when the business may become profitable.

Many analysts have forecast the business to turn profitable next year, but confidence levels have waned after the consecutive string of quarterly losses.

Samsung to unveil Ice Cream Sandwich phone on Oct 19

Samsung Electronics said that it planned to unveil a new smartphone based on Google's latest version of the Android operating system at an event in Hong Kong on October 19.

The announcement came after the world's second-biggest handset maker put off the launch of the new device based on the Ice Cream Sandwich system while the world paid tribute to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died last week.
